Assets
Family and Friends
-
Children who are homeless because of unfit households might not have a family to turn to, but they may have the support of friends in the shelter and/or their chosen family on the street. Many homeless persons gather together and support one another.

Age
-
Children are growing and learning every day. Although they are in a tough situation, they have many years and opportunities ahead of them to improve their circumstances.

Community Organizations
-
Many non-profit organizations, including those listed below, offer resources, support, and shelter to homeless youth.

Coping Skills
-
Because of such extreme circumstances, children who are homeless are forced to cope with the challenges that come with it. They develop coping strategies that will help them endure other struggles they face.
Challenges
Formal Education
-
The lack of a high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is the number one correlate for elevated risk of youth homelessness.
-
As stated in the video, just having somewhere to complete their homework is a challenge. Homeless youth often miss school, are bullied in school, or are too distracted because of extreme hunger or fatigue.
Hygiene
-
Children who live on the street, in a car, or somewhere else have many limits to staying clean. Many go days without showering or brushing their teeth and have limited access to hygiene products.

Food and Nutrition
-
Health food is a "luxury" in most cases because it is more expensive and less accessible than processed junk food. therefore, homeless children often have poor diets, and eat whatever they can whenever they can. They are constantly afraid of when their next meal will be.

Health Care
-
Many homeless children cannot afford and do not have access to healthcare. Those who ran away from family or have no family do not have them to rely on for health care, doctors' appointments, and more.

Sexual Activity
-
According to studies cited by the Department of Health and Human Services, "With few other ways to earn a living, countless homeless adolescents use sex as a means of survival. In fact, the vast majority of them become sexually active at a young age and face more STI exposure than their non-homeless counterparts" (DHHS, 2014).

Mental Health
-
69% of homeless youth report mental health problems
-
Homeless youth rarely have access to proper mental health services, medications, and therapy.

Weather
-
Michigan temperatures can drop well below zero degrees in the winter. Living in a car, on the street, or in an unfit home without proper heating and insulation can be a threat to one's life, causing hypothermia, frostbite, numbness, and even death.
Sociopolitical Considerations
McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act (Subtitle VII-B) (reauthorized by Title IX, Part A of the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015): To ensure that homeless children and youth in Michigan have access to a free and appropriate public school education. This includes:
-
Review and revise, if necessary, all legislation, policies, and procedures which impede the enrollment and educational success of homeless children and youth
-
Collect and report data regarding the number and location of homeless children and youth
-
Adopt a State plan to establish comparable procedures for local and intermediate school boards to enroll and educate homeless children and youth
-
Make grants available to local educational agencies to facilitate enrollment, attendance, and educational success of homeless children and youth
-
Coordinate interagency programs and activities with Federal, State, and local agencies to enhance effective implementation of the McKinney-Vento Act (Michigan Department of Education, 2019).

The Homeless Children and Youth Act of 2017 (H.R. 1511/S. 611) restores local decision-making and improves the ability of communities to meet the unique developmental needs of homeless children, youth, and families, which is the best long-term strategy to reduce all forms of homelessness.
